New requirement: must use Harvard VPN to access the RCE

April 18, 2019

We're changing the way RCE users connect to the RCE. Following the changeover in late May, you'll need to connect to Harvard's VPN in order to use the RCE, whether you are connecting via NoMachine (NX), or SFTP or SSH. In order to connect to VPN, you'll need to claim your HarvardKey and set up two-factor authentication (the DUO app is recommended, but you can also use SMS or a phone call for authentication).

While the majority of the RCE's users have claimed their HarvardKeys, some users were granted RCE access before HarvardKey was a requirement for an RCE account, and others have only used their Harvard user IDs to log into the RCE, and have not needed to access other Harvard-specific resources.

We'll be reaching out individually to create HarvardKey credentials for RCE users who do not have them, and to help those who need to claim their HarvardKeys.

If you already know your Harvard University ID (this is the 8-digit number on your Harvard University ID card), you can claim your HarvardKey and set up two-step verification at https://key.harvard.edu/.

Once you have two-step verification set up, you can connect to Harvard's VPN at https://vpn.harvard.edu/. After connecting to VPN, you can access the RCE as usual.

If you don't have a Harvard ID card and don't know your HUID, you'll probably need to talk to us. In some cases users will already have an account in the Harvard directory, and just need the HUID number. In other cases a user may not have an entry in the Harvard directory at all, in which case we'll need to create a new one. We'll need to know your full name, date of birth, and an e-mail account so we can send you updates about your access to the RCE.

We'll be reaching out, but you can also contact us by calling (617) 495-4734 or sending email to help@iq.harvard.edu

Please DO NOT send your HU ID using e-mail. Your HU ID is confidential information and should not be transmitted via plaintext.
